Pontiac marketed the front-wheel drive 1994 Grand Am with two engine options, a 2.3L four-cylinder and a 3.1L six-cylinder engine. If you have a 1994 Grand Am, following factory recommendations when adding fluids such as engine oil, transmission fluid and brake fluid can help lengthen the life of your car.
Pontiac recommends using 4.1 quarts of SAE 5w30 oil when performing an oil change on both engine types. The fluid level does not reflect changing the oil filter. Use of a high-mileage oil or synthetic with an engine oil additive reconditions the engine seals and prolongs the life of the vehicle. The oil weight reflects all-weather temperatures and you do not need to change oil weights for winter driving.
Both engine types use synthetic multi-vehicle automatic transmission fluids (ATF) for the automatic transmission. Grand Ams with manual transmissions should have manual syncromesh transmission fluid (5w30). Total fill for the 3-speed transmission is 9 quarts and for the 4-speed transmission total fill is 11 quarts. Always check your transmission fluid level with the engine running and warm before adding fluid. Excessive fluid could damage your engine seals.
The Grand Am has power steering, brake and clutch hydraulic systems. All three systems use individual reservoirs with full-lines on the sides of the reservoir. Monitor the fluid levels closely when bleeding any of the systems. The brake and hydraulic systems use DOT-3 brake fluid whereas the power steering system uses standard power steering fluid.
