Removing silicone from car paint is a necessary step when attempting to repaint a car. Silicone is a synthetic compound that comes in a wide variety of forms and is used in many applications. Silicone is used on cars as a sealant to protect the paint from rusting and chipping. It also helps protect the paint from sunlight. When applying a new paint job to a car, removing the silicone is the first step.
Remove any stickers, emblems or decals from the car before removing the silicone from the paint. Wash the car thoroughly to get rid of all dirt, debris and dust. Allow the car enough time to air dry, and use an air blower to remove any dust from in between the seams around the windows. This will ensure the car is properly cleaned before silicone removal.
Pour wax and grease remover on a cloth until the cloth is very damp, and apply the remover to the surface of the car. Spread the remover on the car, rubbing in circular motions. Work in sections so the remover doesn't have time to dry on the car. Begin with the hood and work toward the rear of the car. Once the remover has been applied, wipe off that section with a dry cloth and move on to the next section. This process will remove the silicone from the paint.
Wash the car thoroughly to remove any excess grease, oil and dirt that may remain. Allow the car proper time to air dry before moving on to the painting process.
