Hyundai Sonata Cam Sensor Symptoms

The Sonata represents Hyundai’s midsize sedan, a very competitive market segment. For the 2011 model year, the Hyundai Sonata is in its sixth generation. Camshaft position (CMP) sensors are used to tell the computers in the Sonata which cylinder should be firing. Use of CMP sensors, in conjunction with others, is sometimes referred to as computerized timing advance.

No or Intermittent Starts

  • If the camshaft position sensor fails the Hyundai Sonata may not start or it may experience intermittent starting conditions. This is because the camshaft position sensor helps the computer determine when to fire a cylinder; if the sensor is not working the vehicle may never be able to start.

Inconsistent Engine Operation

  • Hesitation, misfire, unstable idol, bucking, stumbling, chugging, rough idling and stalling on acceleration can all result from a bad camshaft position sensor in a Hyundai Sonata.

Warning Lights and Trouble Codes

  • A check engine light that results in a OBD-II trouble code of P0340 may be caused by a faulty or failed Hyundai Sonata camshaft position sensor. This code can also be related to a grounded wire, powertrain control module failure or an open circuit.
