How to Check the Manual Transmission Fluid in a Volkswagen

Maintaining the correct level of transmission fluid in a manual transmission is vital to keeping any manually shifting car in good order. If the fluid gets low, shifting could become difficult and damage can be done to the shifting components. The steps here should be the same for any Volkswagen model, although it should be attempted only by those with knowledge of their car's components.

Things You'll Need

  • Manual transmission fluid
  • Allen wrench
  • Syringe
  • Jack up the car. Be sure to use jack stands placed underneath the car in case the jack fails. This work will require you to be underneath the car, and can be potentially dangerous work.

  • Find where the transaxle housing is. There will be two separate plugs: a higher one that is the fill hole, and a lower one that is the drainage hole. Unscrew the higher one.

  • Check the level of the transmission fluid. As there is no dipstick, this will be done visually. The fluid should be up to the lower part of the hole. If it is not, then add more fluid using the recommended fluid for your vehicle.

  • Use a syringe to add additional fluid as needed. Do not overfill, as it may cause leaks.

  • Check the level of the fluid again to ensure the transaxle is properly filled. If so, screw the fill plug back on tightly.

  • Drive the car a short distance, then inspect for any leaks. If it is leaking, ensure the fill plug has not come loose.
