Resetting the Oil on a 2004 BMW 545i

When you own a high-end luxury car like the 2004 545i, you likely don't want an unsightly oil change sticker cluttering up the windshield. Thanks to the oil monitoring system in your car, there is no need for the sticker, as this system will alert you when it is time for an oil change. After changing the oil, you need to reset this system manually. Resetting this system is fairly simple and requires no tools.

Resetting the Oil Monitoring System

  • Turn the ignition to the "On" position without starting the engine, then press and release the "Check" button on the stalk to the left of the steering wheel until the date shows on the display in the instrument cluster. Press and hold the tripmeter reset button on the left side of the instrument cluster until the service intervals display on the screen. Press and release the tripmeter reset button until the oil can shows on the instrument cluster display. Press and hold the tripmeter reset button until "Reset?" displays, then release the button. Press and hold the tripmeter button one final time until the instrument cluster display shows "----" then resets to the default interval for your 545i. Turn the ignition off.
