How do I Check the Manual Transmission Oil on a 95 Volkswagen Jetta?

The manual transmission in a 1995 Volkswagen Jetta uses a different method of checking transmission oil than an automatic vehicle. The automatic vehicle has a measuring dipstick that gives more of a precise measurement of how much transmission oil is needed. The manual model has no dipstick, and a less scientific method determines if the transmission is full of fluid. After removing the fill plug, if you can touch your finger to the hole and feel fluid, it is adequately filled. If not, you must add more.

Things You'll Need

  • Car jack
  • Jack stands
  • Fill tube
  • Manual transmission fluid
  • Goggles
  • Jack the car up, and put it in place with jack stands.

  • Slide underneath the Jetta, making sure you have the goggles properly fitted. Locate the fill plug leading to the transmission under the vehicle. The fill plug is located underneath the vehicle on the driver's side near the same place you shift gears. You will see a disc that can be unscrewed to gain access to the transmission oil.

  • Unscrew the fill plug. Check for fluid.

  • Add more fluid if the check indicates you need more. Open a bottle of fluid and attach a fill tube to the top of the bottle. Connect the other end of the tube to the fill hole.

  • Tilt the bottle to allow fluid to flow into the transmission, squeezing it gently.

  • Check fluids and add more transmission oil until adequate levels are reached. When complete, screw the fill plug back into place, and lower the car.
