How to Drain a Polaris 440 Crankcase

The Polaris 440's crankcase houses the oil that the snowmobile needs to lubricate critical engine components. Oil is drawn up from the crankcase into the crankshaft while an oil pickup circulates the oil throughout the engine. Polaris recommends changing the oil after 25 hours of service life, so when it's time to change the oil, you'll need to know how to drain the 440's crankcase.

Things You'll Need

  • Allen wrench set
  • Oil catch pan
  • Place the oil catch pan underneath the Polaris 440's crankcase. The crankcase is located under the engine. There should be enough clearance for a small oil catch pan to fit directly underneath the engine.

  • Locate the oil drain plug. There is one hole in the bottom of the engine. It is located in the guard directly in the center of the bottom of the engine.

  • Insert the head of the allen wrench into the hole and orient the wrench until you feel the wrench lock into the allen wrench nut. Turn the nut counterclockwise to loosen the allen wrench nut and allow the oil to drain into the oil catch pan.
