How to a proper oil change on a 2008 Honda Accord

Saving money is going to become more and more important to many people. The 20+ dollars you can save by changing your own oil can certainly be a start.

Things You'll Need

  • 4.5 quarts of 5W-20 oil
  • Wrench
  • Oil filer wrench (or a good strong grip)
  • Oil drain pan
  • Ramps or something to raise the car up safely
  • Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature, then shut it off. This will help the oil flow out easier, and it will also make things much hotter. I usually run the car for about 3 minuets as a compromise.

  • Open the hood (latch by your left foot when you are in the driver seat), and remove the engine oil fill cap. This will allow for a better flow of the oil when you are draining. Remove the oil drain bolt and washer from the bottom of the engine. Drain the oil into a drain pan.

  • Remove the oil filter and let the remaining oil drain.

  • Moisten the new oil filter gasket with some fresh oil and install.

  • The manufacturer suggests a new washer on the drain bolt when you reinstall, I never have and haven't had issues, but I will leave that up to you. You should also tighten to 29 foot pounds(39 N·m , 4.0 kgf·m). Not everyone has a torque wrench, so basically a hand tighten and maybe about another 1/2 turn or so. Turning the bolt too tight can cause some expensive issues!

  • Add about 4.5 quarts of oil and screw cap back on. Check to see that the oil is not pouring out under the car.

  • Start the car. The oil pressure indicator should turn off within 5 seconds. If not, turn off the engine, and check for leaks and the dipstick.

  • If there are no issues let the engine run for several minutes, then check the drain bolt and oil filter for leaks. Some burning oil smells are comment if you didn't wipe up all the drips from the removal of the oils plug and filter.

  • Turn off the engine, let it sit for several minutes, then check the oil
level on the dipstick. Add more oil if necessary.

  • To Reset Oil Life %

  • Turn the ignition switch to the ON (II) position. Press the select/reset knob repeatedly until the engine oil life indicator is displayed.

  • Press the select/reset knob for about 10 seconds. The engine oil
life and the maintenance item code(s) will blink.

  • Press the select/reset knob for another 5 seconds. The maintenance item code(s) will disappear, and the engine oil life will reset to ''100.''
