How to Remove the White Lettering on Tires

Some custom auto enthusiasts love the look that certain tires have, but like a solid black exposure. If a tire comes only in a version with raised white lettering, it creates a problem. If you are shopping for tires online, the letters “rwl” indicate the tire comes with the white lettering. Although there are several ways to get the solid black look on such tires, there are drawbacks to each method. To avoid the drawbacks, it is best to find blackwall tires that you like.

  • Reverse the tires. Mount them on the rim so that the inside is facing to the outside. It is the only permanent and safe way to make a tire with raised white lettering into a blackwall tire.

  • Try a blacking agent. This will maintain the original look of the tire, but in a blackwall version. Cyclo Industries manufactures Raindance professional tire care products that are commonly used in car dealerships and detail shops. They offer a tire blacking substance that matches the color and appearance of most tires. You won't find it in parts stores because it is a professional product. However, you might persuade someone at a dealership or detail store to get a can for you.

  • Use a razor blade to scrape the lettering off. This is more difficult than it sounds because the lettering is usually made entirely of white rubber that is cured into the tire. You have to remove the entire letter, which can leave unsightly pits in the tire.
