Flaming River Battery Disconnect Switch - 4-Wheel & Off-Road Magazine

We like being able to turn off all electrical power to our 4x4s. This can be a problem with modern rides with clocks and computers, but our older rides can handle this sensible upgrade.

Flaming River makes a killer electrical switch to disconnect the battery from the vehicle, and it’s keyed so only you can use it. This is ideal if you want to keep your rig from being started, or even if you just want to work on the wiring without having to take off a battery cable. You can even hook your winch power to it, so no one powers the winch while unattended. They call this the Big Switch for a reason: It’s rated at 250 continuous amps, which is way more than you should ever need. It also fits most anywhere and is supereasy to install; we took more time finding tools than actually mounting it!

We only needed one battery cable to connect the positive side of the battery to the switch, then all the other cables that were on the battery were moved to the switch. The stainless steel key is simply two prongs that stick into the switch to turn it. The little bump on the one prong indexes into the switch, so a person can’t use some other tool. The key easily goes on your keychain, unlike the large plastic versions. Now we can walk away from the Jeep and feel more safe and secure that it will be there when we return.
