Dropping in a new powerplant from another vehicle is the cure for more power, better performance, and bragging rights on the street and at the strip. lately, Ford and Chrysler have been doing their best to create better performance crate engines for enthusiasts to snatch up and figure out how to wedge into their engine bays. However, they simply pale in comparison to the sheer popularity of the venerable LS-series engines from gm. What makes these engines even more desirable is the extreme power potential with the addition of a supercharger or turbo. Where many enthusiasts rip up and get lost is fathoming the complexity of EFI and its many plugs, connectors, and wires. The aftermarket has stepped up and produced plenty of conversion harnesses, but it's hard to beat the tuning capability of Holley's new line of EFI vehicle management systems. depending on your needs, Holley has developed three different ECMs to provide basic through hardcore plug-and-play tunability. The new avenger EFI is intended for users who want a bolt-on and- go self-learning system without the need for a laptop. Stepping up to the HP creates a fantastic factory ECM replacement. For all-out tuning adjustments with potent nitrous, superchargerer, and turbo capabilities, the aptly named Dominator stands alone at the top.   |   1. GM designed its LS engine harnesses to be removable from the vehicle in a standalone manner, so that's where we started. We methodically went plug by plug until we had everything pulled up on top of the engine and ready to be removed. Project Novakane, our '04 Sierra race truck, has been a rolling testbed for a number of different approaches to modifying, tuning, and building power with two different LS-based engines. In its current state, the Sierra sports a gm Performance Parts' lSX 376 topped with a TVS2300 magnuson magnacharger with all of the top-quality performance accessories you would come to expect from an all-out custom build. up until now, we had been running on the truck's hacked-up original engine wiring harness and ECM. The stock ecm was not allowing us the flexibility necessary to reel in the bigger power numbers we wanted, and we were concerned that with 12 psi of boost, the engine may not last very long without expanded tuning capabilities. We decided to remove the stock ECM and wiring, and swap over to Holley's Dominator ECM and LS3 harness. can you say big power upgrade? While we were at it, we had the mobile electrician pros at mobile- Tech install a new Painless Performance hot rod wiring harness so we would have 100 percent new wiring front to back in the truck. check out the story to see what a difference this system made for our street and track machine.
