Auto Insurance Claims: Auto insurance to cover all vehicles, occasional drivers, replacement vehicles

Question
Hello,

My auto insurance covers occasional drivers, but only if those drivers live in a different residence. When my fiancee moved in, I told him that I would add him to my auto insurance. He said that he was already covered under his own auto insurance. He said that he purchased an option to cover him for all vehicles. He even called his agent to verify this. Is this possible? I've never heard of this option. We live in Illinois.

Sincerely,

-Lori

Answer
Hi Lori,

I been in the insurance business for over 20 years and I have never heard of this either.

It is possible to cover temporary replacement vehicles but not another vehicle in the household that is or could be available for regular use. Auto insurance follows the car not the driver. If there were an accident and your fiancee was not listed on your policy as a driver the insurance company could potentially deny any claims exposing you to great liability. The same goes for his insurance. You need to be listed on his policy as well just in case you drive his car. It would be less expensive if you were to both get insurance from the same insurance company. Then you would be eligible for milti-car discounts.

I hope this helps
