Auto body repair & detailing: Repair crack in plastic bumber, chrysler lhs, 3m adhesive

Question
I have a chrysler LHS that has a cracked rear bumper. The crack is about 12" in lenghh in a vertical direction.
It is a clean crack with no splintering or missing pieces.

Is it posible to do a home repair? I have been doing some researching and there is a lot of talk about plastic welding and appropriate tools.
It there was a product I could use to "glue up or reapir" the bumper from the unfinished side that would be great.

Can you recommend a simple solution or am I best to replace the bumper through my insurance?

Regards,

Ron

Answer
3M makes a bumper repair glue type line of repair products. You need to grind the crack on the back side make a deep grind at the crack be careful not to go through to the other side. Use 3M solvent cleaner than 3M adhesive promoter Very important. Than 3M adhesive mesh tape and finely 3M adhesive spread about 4" around the crack. This should hold as long as it is not bumped again. You should actually repair from both sides of the bumper. Ask for advise at you local Napa or Carquest type store. The absolute right way to solve your repair dilemma is to replace the bumper. But the other way should hold if its done right. Use some tape on the out side to hold it together while you repair until the glue is dry.
