Car Stereos: 1999 Grand Caravan stereo, dodge grand caravan, infinity system

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan with the Infinity system.  The driver's side dash speaker appeared to be going out.  After a few months, the entire system now only has a high pitched screeching and the system does not work at all.  Could the problem be an amp or the radio itself?

Thanks for you help.

ANSWER: Hi Jon,

Unfortunately, this is one of the issues that I'm not sure how I'd go about fixing without hearing it and seeing it for myself.

A high pitched squeal out of the whole system would suggest to me that the amp has blown.

My suggestion in this situation is to take it to a stereo shop and have them diagnose it, since this is one of those things that are tough to diagnose via just a description.

QUESTION: If it is the amp, where is it and is it easy to change?

Answer
Hi Jon,

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the factory amplifier on your vehicle is behind the glove compartment fastened to the firewall.  Replacing it isn't overly difficult, since it's all clips that plug into it.  You should be able to buy a new one (you'll have to go factory, since an aftermarket amp *would* be a fair bit of work), replace it, and just plug it in.
