Car Stereos: Installing a new stereo into my Trailblazer, great falls montana, audible warnings

Question
QUESTION: Hi I was shopping for a new radio to put in my 2004 Trailblazer and the guy selling it to me suggested i buy a certain wiring kit for $125.  He said this part isnt necessary but if i didnt have it installed it would corrupt the diagnostic test the dealership runs on the vehicle if i ever needed maintenance.  Do you know anything about this?

ANSWER: Hi Stephen,

The pricetag they're asking is a bit high for that part -- it's usually $65-100 (dependent on whether or not you have the Bose and/or OnStar in your vehicle).

And needing it for diagnostic tests as far as I'm aware is not true.

However, you should buy that part as it is necessary to maintain your door chime, audible warnings (like lights on, etc.), and various other features your car came with.

So in all, yes, you should get it, but probably not from that particular shop.

Answer
If you're that far out, your best bet is to buy the hardware online.

http://www.crutchfield.com/

Tell it your year, make model, and your options (and make sure you get it right because it's important), and then it should tell you the hardware you need (there should be a 'installation hardware' thing on the right hand side after you select your options.
