Car Stereos: Speaker box, chevy silverado, chevy tahoe

Question
I have a 99 Chevy Tahoe and I am trying to build a box for 2 12's. I have Audiobahn equipment (amp and speakers). I have had this equipment in my Chevy Silverado in a truck box and well the truck box is way too big for the Tahoe. All I want are outside dimensions for an ported rectangle box. I have seen your advice about using the 3/4" and that is what I will go with unless 1" isn't much more. The website says I need 1.3 cuft for the space saver design and 2.3 cuft for the everyday performance design. Can you please give me the outside dimensions for 2 12's in both the 1.3 spacesaver and the 2.3 performer? I know I have to have a divider in between both subs. Another question, is it a myth that you are not supposed to mount the amp on the speaker box?

Answer
Basically, with two subs with a divider, you'd need double the space.

There are plenty of websites on the Internet that will give you the dimensions you need to build the box -- I can't just throw numbers out to you because it depends on the type of wood you're using, the depth of the subwoofers, etc.  Just ensure each sub has at least 1.3 cubic feet of airspace, they're separated, and you build the box WELL so it can handle the force exerted on it by the subwoofers.

As for mounting the amp on the box, that's a personal decision.  I've done it plenty of times, but I would suggest over time, it will probably shorten the life of the amp, as it'd be subject to a lot more force and movement it otherwise would be.

Good luck,
Justin
