BMW Repair: BMW95/525i, coolant hoses, coolant leaks

Question
Hello Mr. Slater
RE: BMW 95' 525i wagon.
I would like to have some ideas for getting heat back into my
car, since winter is approaching in the Northeast,(Phila).

It seems as if the the heat thermostat is not working at all and
only produces cool outside air, 65F .It did work prior to this
summer.

Any ideas would be welcome.
Regards,

R. Wells

Answer
Robert, I am assuming that the air volume from the blower works well? Do the thumb wheel and knobs for temperature control work all seem to work normally (not loose or very hard to change). Check the water/heater valve. You should have three black coolant hoses going into the firewall from the heater valve. Two are inlets and one is an outlet back to the engine. If you have dual zone climate control then you will have two inlets. Fire up the car and run it to operating temp. Turn on all heat settings and fan speed on the Climate control module. Feel the three coolant hoses going into the firewall. Two should be hot if the Heater valve is working. Oh also make sure you have a good coolant level before you get the car hot and make sure the engine is off. Also see if the auxiliary water pump (right by the heater valve) is working. It should be vibrating when you request heat with the engine off/but key on.  It has two hoses and looks like a little electric motor (cause it is). Make sure you eliminate any coolant leaks. Let me know what you find.
