BMW Repair: internal lights of 2003 bmw m3, 2003 bmw m3, rear view mirror

Question
For the last month, the internal lights of my 2003 bmw m3 (purchased from dealer with 3400 miles, warranty still in effect), will turn on spontaneously when i am driving.  Sometimes i could press thu button usually used to turn on these lights (next to the rear view mirror) and it would turn off, though it would always turn on again, maybe mins later, maybe days.  Sometimes i would have to open and close my door and it would turn off, again always temporarily.  I never get a light saying my door is open.  The first time I took it to the dealer, they simply pressed the button on and off , said it seemed to be working fine.  So the second time i took it was after i was working all night, and the lights stayed on even after i had parked, and no matter what i did they wouldnt turn off.  When i took it to the dealership, the associate saw what was happening.  Later in the day the technicion called, said he drove it around and saw it happen.  But they are unable to figure out why and what to do to fix it.  Any thoughts?  I am supposed to pick my car up in a few hrs, and more than likely after 2 1/2 days, they havent found what to do to fix it.

Answer
Sameer, This problem is probably one of two things. Either driver or passenger door lock actuator/latch being intermitently faulty or the General Module (controls interior lighting/pow. windows/locking) is switching the light on by itself with no faulty input. The hard part is that the car won't stay broken for them to pin point the problem. You can't fix a problem that isn't there when you check the vehicle. Please have some patience because you have to catch the car in the act. I would lube the door lock actuator latch w/silicone spray while moving the latch to make sure it isn't hanging up at all on the door striker. I would also check the door contacts recognition on the diagnosis machine and make sure the GM was recieving the signals. It is very doubtful that the actual light switch is bad, because of the symptoms you describe. Ask the service writer in depth what they checked on the vehicle. Ask if they can swap in a good part and let you drive the car for a day to see if it fixes it (trial and error). Try to work with the Writer and if he doesn't make the effort ask to speak to the service manager and shopforeman with zero attitude and explain what you would like to.
