BMW Repair: No power to starter, starter relay, test light

Question
No paint on starter & mounting but is there a starter relay somewhere to replace. If so, wheres it located and what color. I will check for wiring problems. Pretty sure it is wiring. Thank you

Question -
Don,
I have a 91 525i S-Type, starter wont even turn when I turn keys. I used an elect/light power tester to see if any power coming from batt to starter(+) but no light. I think car may have electrical/wiring short somewhere. Prior to this, starter would turn halfway 1st try but would start on 2nd try. Just bought starter last month rebuild. I have replaced the starter twice in over 2 yrs. Please help!!

Having had to replace the starter twice would leads me to believe you have a wiring problem wether it be power or ground. Were the new starters painted in any way?I know this sounds odd but the starter will not get a good ground through the paint.I know the wires, after time get brittle and break so recheck the wires for that. But make sure the mounting surfaces for the starter are paint free.

Answer
You mentioned that you tested the sytem with a test light checking from the battery to the starter. The only wire on the starter that you will get to light the light is going from the negative side of the battery to the large wire on the solenoid on the starter. The other wire(smaller one)will only light the light when the light goes from the negative side of the battery to the small wire and the key is in the 2nd position, when released the light will go out.
