BMW Repair: Air conditioning/heat, bmw dealer, blow air

Question
Hey Don:

Thanks for you help in advance.  I have 1993 740i.  The air conditioner does not blow air.  If I turn the defrost on, after an extended period of time, it seems to try to turn on, but it makes some "creepy" sounds.  There is some heat given off that works for defrost, but thats about it. Clearly, the unit is not blowing.

The cooling system is working, based on a friend's brief inspection under the hood. Yet, no cool air is blowing inside.  This is Alabama.  As you might imagine, it is getting hot.

I've changed the fuses in case that's the problem.  I've heard sometimes the air conditioner filter plugs with BMWs, but I really don't have a clue.

Is there anything I can do at home?  I'm not near a BMW dealer.  I have a local mechanic that claims he can fix anything.  The cost of repair is an issue.  Thanks.

Answer
If your a/c clutch is spinning when engaged the a/c has other problems such as being plugged up some where but doubtful.Make sure the clutch is spinning when you turn the system on.You'll be able to see it.
About the fan not operating,I would check the ground at the battery make sure they are clean.
