My MIL has a 2003 325i, with a "BMW Business" CD/radio in dash.  The twist action on/off knob is broken.  Is there an easy fix?

You can see a picture at: http://academic.cuesta.edu/gbaxley/images/radio.jpg

Thanks for any help,

is the knob itself broken and not able to be/stay on the shaft?

Follow up:  The knob is still attached to the unit, although it is very loose in a inward/outward motion and it feels like I could rip it off of the shaft with some wiggling or a good hard yank.  The knob rotates with a clicking/detent feel as it spins, but this does not activate the radio to "on."   This car was bought used a few months ago and I don't know it's history, although it seems to be in very good shape otherwise.  My wife turned the radio knob to "off" a few days ago and that is when the problem started.  I thought about trying to pluck the knob off of the shaft and put it back on with crazy glue, but it is my Mother In Law's car.  The BMW shop quoted $500 to fix (aka replace unit).  Pleasing my MIL:  priceless!

thanks again,
Greg

It sounds as if you'll have to remove the radio for further diagnosis. With out being able to turn the unit on sounds as if it is internally broken. It seems to still be attached as you here a clicking sound,I know $500 sounds like a lot but it is cheaper than having the woes of the MIL.")

Is there a simple way to describe removing the radio, or a website with directions, or is this something only fine Bavarian engineers can accomplish?

Answer
Its not an engineering feet, although you may feel as if it is.It is hard for me to see in the picture but are there little doors on the side of the radio?(about where your finger was)If so pop the doors open and there are 2 pentagon screws to remove the radio( an allen might work) and make sure you have the code BEFORE you unplug it
