BMW Repair: 1996 BMW 318 is, dashboard lights, stomp on

Question
How do I do a dionostic check on this series? I have the reader but I do not know where to hook it up

Answer
this is OBD2 so you will need an OBD2 reader with the BMW connector (its round with 3 inch diameter and has small round prongs) If you have this then you will hook it up to the matching port underneath your hood.

If you dont have this computer and connector you can still diagnose check engine lights.  Heres how to do it on your car...

Turn the car completely off. Turn the key to the possition where all the dashboard lights come on. push and hold down the "miles driven reset pin) found on the instrument panel. While holding down the pin stomp on the gas 5 times. Let go of the pin. The car will run through a series of numbers but what your going for is the check engine light. It will blink once. Then it will blink a 4 digit code.

ie. it blinks once then goes blinks 1 then 4 then 4 then 1...the code is 1441 ... which in this case is a bad 02 sensor... do this tell me the code you get and ill tell you what it means. hope this helps.
