Alfa Romeo Repair: speedometer and odometer problem, electronic converter, source point

Question
Stephen,
Thanks for your quick reply to my question about low voltage on the ignition switch circuit and the suggestion of using relays.  Is there any reason not to bypass the ignition switch and wire the wipers and heater fan directly to an always hot good source point?
A second question, if you don't mind, is about my speedometer and odometer.  This is on my 1990 Alfa Graduate Spider with 88k miles. I am puzzled about the way the failure occured.  After sitting for a couple of months in a garage, I took the car on a four hour trip.  Within the first hour I noticed that the trip meter(and odometer) were counting miles too slowly. Over the next several hours they slowed even more until they both stopped and have not moved since.  The speedometer worked perfectly.  I used the car daily for about two more weeks and then the speedometer quit.  I didn't see it fail just noticed while driving that it had quit.
Before I tear it apart I wanted to ask your opinion.  If a cable broke or the electronic/converter  sender failed why didn't the speedo and odometer quit at the same time?  Thanks!  Charles

Answer
You will either tire of turning off both items all the time
or you will be in a hurry one time and leave the fan on.

The speedometer problem is in the speedometer unit itself.
However, look carefully at the plug on the sender, one or
both wires are not properly crimped--redo them.
