Chevrolet Repair: connecting park switch

Question
QUESTION: i have a 96 s10 zr2 that some one worked on before i purchased it and the covers are missing from the steering column im guessing it was changed and not finished before i purchased itany way it will only crank in neutral i can see the park switch that is connected to the column but the wires are hanging off of it iam trying to figure where th wires hook up to  can you please help me it has the automatic transmission with the 4.3 liter engine  thank you tracy bearden

ANSWER: HI TRACY,,THE NEUTRAL SAFTY SWITCH IS LOCATED ON THE LEFT SIDE TRANSMISSION ON THIS TRUCK..IF YOU ARE LOOKING INSIDE THE TRUCKS CAB THIS IS MORE THEN LIKELY THE IGNITION SWITCH AND WIRING THIS IS NOT YOUR PROBLEM..LOOK DOWN AT LEFT SIDE OF TRANS WHERE THE GEAR SHIFTER GOES INTO THE SIDE OF THE TRANSMISSION, [CALLED NEUTRAL SAFTY SWITCH] YOU WILL SEE A SWITCH WITH WIRES GOING TO IT..LOOSEN UP THE SCREWS ON THE SIDES AND TURN IT WAY WAY OR THE OTHER,LOCK IT DOWN AND SEE IF IT WILL START UP NOW IN PARK..THIS SWITCH IS ADJUSTABLE TO A POINT..IF THIS DOES NOT WORK THE SWITCH MAYBE BAD..LET ME KNOW HOW THIS GOES AND GOOD LUCK TO YOU,,,TOM...

QUESTION: okay then what is the switch that is connected to steering column  when you place the selector in park it pushes the botton on the switch but the wires from the switch are just dangling and not connected to any thing can you tell me what this switch is and where does it connect to the wiring harness at i would appreciate any help you could give me on this thank you tracy bearden

ANSWER: HI TRACY, THE SWITCH YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT SOUNDS LIKE THE PARK INERLOCK...THIS PREVENTS THE CAR BEING SGHIFTED INTO GEAR WITHOUT  ONE EITHER YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKE OR KEY TURNED ON....
TRY MOVING THE SHIFT LEVER WITH YOUR FOOT NOT ON THE BRAKE OR ENGINE RUNNING...IT SHOULD NOT SHIFT. IF SO,, SOMEONE BY-PASSED THIS SAFTY FEATURE....NO BIG DEAL AS LONG AS YOU ARE THE ONLY DRIVER....LET ME KNOW IF THIS IS NOT IT,BUT IT SHOULD BE....GOOD LUCK,, TOM

QUESTION: since this is the interlock if i wanted to reconnect it to the harness where would it hook up im trying toget everything back to as close as factory as possible once everything is finshed im hoping it will be as good as the day it rolled out of the show room thank you again tracy bearden

Answer
HI TRACY,,, THIS INTERLOCK HARNESS WILL GO TO THE BOTTOM PART OF IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER..THIS IS WHERE YOUR KEY FITS INTO..IT IS VERY POSSIBLE THAT SOMEONE REMOVED THE ORIGINAL LOCK CYLINDER AND INSTALLED A OLDER LOCK CYLINDER TO OVERIDE THIS..LET ME KNOW, AND GOOD LUCK TO YOU,,,TOM
