Chevrolet Repair: replacing freeze plugs, cooling system pressure tester, chevy g20

Question
I have a 1988 Chevy G20 Full size conversion van and I believe that one of the freeze plugs is leaking. I need to know what has to be removed in order to change this part? My girlfriend thinks its the water pump but water is leaking out  about 3 inches directly above the power steering pump behind a bracket. Do you have any suggestions of what I can do to check and find out just what is leaking?

Answer
Well it sounds like you cannot see exactly where it is leaking with the bracket in the way.  I would go to Autozone or equalivant and use their tool loaner program.  I would get the cooling system pressure tester.  You connect this to the COLD radiator, inplace of the cap.  You pump it up and look for the leaks.

There are 2 or 3 freeze plugs on each side of the motor, two each on front and rear, one on each end of the heads.  Any of these could leak.  In the area you describe it could be the head freeze plug, or the one next to the timing chain.

I hate to say it, but it could also be a head gasket.  That sounds more like the area you describe.  There is also a couple of hoses running through there, and the intake has some coolant that passes through.

The best bet is to borrow the pressure tool I described.
