Chrysler Repair: 89 New Yorker Fuel Pump: no output but runs, cloth filter, check valves

Question
Same question I asked Keven, sorry I assumed this would be a basic question for someone versed in auto repair.

I disconnected the fuel line at the fuel pump on an 89 New Yorker. I then ran a jumper from the positive post on the battery to the positive on the coil. I can hear the pump running, but no fuel is coming from the pump. My question is; should I be able to see fuel coming from the output port on the pump, even without the system pressurized.

But this is outside of my expertise.

Answer
Hi Beau,
I have never heard of a situation where the pump, if running, would not put out fuel because it was disconnected (pressure-wise) from the rest of the system. It seems to me that the pump will pressurize a system by pumping fuel rather than the reverse. I haven't tried it, but it only makes sense to me.
It could be that the intake cloth filter on the pump itself is clogged. There are also a couple of check valves in the pump module, one of which could be stuck open which would thus by-pass the output flow back into the tank. So you could remove the unit and check that possibility.
Please let me know if you find something interesting.
