Hyundai Repair: HYUNDAI IMMOBILIZER, 2006 hyundai azera, hyundai azera

Question
I have a 2006 Hyundai Azera.  The manual tells me how to "Limp Home" if the immobilzer stops the engine.  The manual also tells me that I should have received the security code to be able to start the engine.  If I don't have the code I am told to go to the Hyundai dealer to get it.  I went to the dealer and they have no idea of the code or where to get it.  I showed them the page in the manual where the immobilizer code is diacussed and they are at a loss to help.  do you klnow how I can get the code for my vehicle?  I don't think I'll ever need it but if I ever do, I could save a towing fee if I had it.

Answer
Your car comes without such a code.  To enable the limp-home mode, the code will need to be programmed into the immobilizer module.  It can be any four-digit numerical code of your choosing.  The dealer's sales department may not be familiar with this, but the someone in the service department should be.

Hyundai has released technical service bulletin (TSB) 06-90-009 detailing how to program the immobilizer with the dealer's scan tool.  If the service personnel don't know about this, you should be able to refer them to the TSB# above.  It's a relatively simple procedure, but there may be a charge associated with the shop time for programming your code.

Hyundai is the only manufacturer I know of which offers service information to the public for free.  You can see the shop manuals, TSBs, and other information at www.hmaservice.com.  You'll need to register for a free account, and the site requires Internet Explorer.
