Land Rover Repair: Freelander Starter, starter solenoid, mechanical background

Question
MY 2003 Freelander has what seems to be a dead spot in the starter. Sometimes it turns right over, others I have to turn the key about 20 times before it cranks. When it does not crank, I can hear the starter/solenoid clicking, and sometimes it will start to turn but stops. I think the starer is kaput. How big of a job is it to change? I beleive it is located and accessible through the drivers wheel well. I do have quite a mechanical background, mostly on older cars, but I have done many repairs on newer cars, including my Audi and the Freelander.

Answer
It's pretty difficult to get at the starter on that car.  That said, no special tools or equipment are needed, so it's a task a do it yourself could attempt.

Last time I looked you could download a workshop manual here:

That takes yo through the job step by step
