Land Rover Repair: Range Rover HSE 2001, range rover hse, shift lever

Question
The gear selector on my 2001 Range Rover HSE is stuck in reverse, The key will not release from yhe ignition, nor will the vehicle start. It would appear the button on the gear selector is loose and not springing when lifted.

I can't tell from here if the shifter itself broke, or the cable.  We see both.  Breakage of the shift lever is more common.  Pry off the top and unscrew the handle to see if it broke apart.  If not it's a bigger job to change the cable.  You can remove the cable from the transmission and manually shift to neutral to haul the vehicle into a shop
