Land Rover Repair: 1999/2000 Disco II purchase, oil leaks, water leaks

Question
First of all. I want to thank everyone who contributes to this site. I dont' think I would even be considering a purchase unless I had found this site. I have accepted the fact that buying a use LR will be a commitment to fairly expensive maintenance. My biggest concern before I pull the trigger (which may be this weekend) is with proper maintenance care, "how many miles can I expect a 99/00 Disco II engine to go". I am hoping to take a 108K or a 127K DiscoII to at least 175K. Am I off my rocker or is a reasonable expectation. I goal here is to put 50k on this bugger before I start looking at engine swaps dollars?

Please let me know your thoughts.

Answer
Hi David,

good luck with your purchase.  If you maintain any vehicle on a regular basis, it can last many years.  Land Rovers are rugged but have several problems that 'dog' it's owners regardless of maintenace:

ABS, HDC, TC lights
air suspension leaks
water leaks
oil leaks
head gaskets
sticking exhaust valves
corroding electrical connectors
power window failures
door lock failures
rear door hinges
under carriage rusting

Q: <<I am hoping to take a 108K or a 127K DiscoII to at least 175K. Am I off my rocker or is a reasonable expectation.>>

A:  don't know and YES.

A: You should have the LR inspected by a LR dealer BEFORE you make the purchase.  It will cost you $100 - $200 but it's worth it.  Make sure to specify exactly what you want the dealer to do...otherwise, they'll do what they want and then say "well, you never asked for that!".

Best of luck,
