Land Rover Repair: Intermittant starting problems, spider unit, plausible causes

Question
John,
I have had intermittant starting problems with my 97 Discovery. Once i get to a place and go ru some errands and come back 2-3 hours later, it will not start. I just get a hissing sound for less than a second. However if I leave it alone for a 8-12 hours it starts as if nothing is wrong. Other times when this happend I just played around locking and unlocking of the car with key as well as with remote . And sometimes that worked. After going through this for 6-8 times over a year, now it will NOT start. Battery is Ok. I even tried starting with a jump start. No avail.
After having read the various string there are two  plausible causes. Either it is the Starter, bad ground connection/s and/or the "Spider Unit". I have checked the starter. It appears OK. There must be several ground conection on this vehicle, is there any aprticular one that is associated with the starting problem that I should look out for? I also opened the center console looking for the "Spider Unit" but can NOT find this dar thing. What does it look like, size and shape: even a picture would help, if you send one!
Thanks for your anticipated help!
Laji

Answer
I have not heard of the security controller being called a "spider" but apparently it's common.  Anyway, I would get the wiring diagram for the car, which can be downloaded along with any other repair infor for about $18 from www.landrovertechinfo.com

I would follow the signals . . is the signal reaching the solenoid?  If so, you need a starter.  If not, I would go to the ignition switch.  Is power emerging on the crank wire?  If not, you need a switch.

Next I would look at the neutral switch on the transmission.  Is it getting and passing power on crank?

The above situations account for 90% of no-cranks

Failing that, tear into the dash.  The alarm parts are indeed under the wheel.  On LRs site they have photos of the parts in the component locator section.  Bear in mind LR does not call those parts a spider either, they are relays and control units.
