Land Rover Repair: Engine Knock at idle 1999 DII, vacuum hoses, rocker shaft

Question
Ok, fixed the cruise, broken vacuum line. The shimmy is only once in awhile. Rotors are new too. The engine knocking seems to be coming from the rear of the block, actually above the plugs though. At least that is where it sounds loudest with the stethascope. I think it sounds like a bearing, but I'm hoping for a noisy lifter or rocker arm. I will however check the cat. But I can hear it in the motor. Thanks

Hello I have a DII 1999, it seems to have a slight engine knock coming from the rear of the engine, you can hear it best near the front doors underneath. I have a mechanics stethascope, I will try to locate it. What is your suspicions? Also the cruise control will not engage. And lastly, occasionally when I apply the brakes, I get a shimmy. I release and reapply and it's gone, any suggestions here? Thanks alot for your time. I just bought the vehicle last week. I ordered the shop manuals too. I don't mind working on vehicles and from the looks of all the post, I may be in store for some work. Also it has 73,000 miles on it. The previous owner had replaced the rear main seal about a year ago. I will know more when I get all the reciepts. thanks again

Chris

Answer -
The most common source of engine knock is a rattling catalytic converter, or a failed rocker arm in the motor.

The shudder when stopping sounds like brake rotors

Cruise problems are most often broken vacuum hoses near the actuator

Answer
Glad to hear cruise is OK

If you're sure the noise is in the motor look to the rocker shafts.  When you get the rocker assembly off the car look at the steel cup the pushrod presses against - they come loose and that's the noise.

LR has an updated rocker shaft assembly to address this.
