Land Rover Repair: Suspension/Bearings? 95 Disco I, axle components, canadian tire

Question
John,
Hey there, Wes in Nova Scotia again.  I just about have her (95 Disco I) running like a champ but I have a new issue.  Well, it's kind of new.  I am getting a pretty pronounced "clunk" and I can kind of feel it coming from the left front when I am turning certain corners, or stopping/accelerating.  I thought the shocks were just completely shot, but when I was parked the other day I started turning the steering wheel back and forth and could feel a bit of a "hitch" in it as the tire caught the pavement.  Is this a wheel bearing?  If so, how difficult is that to change and how much are they?  Finally, being Canadian I am afraid to ask you this...if I got the parts myself would you trust Canadian Tire to do it?

Unrelated...rear door won't open!  The handle froze up on me and no amount of degreasing or lubing, even under the LR oval will do the trick.  Can't open from inside or out.  Any ideas other than using a crash axe?  Thanks alot!  Talk to you soon!

Answer
Hi Wes,

this sounds like the CV joint - part of the axle components.  If you have LR do this, it'll cost you about $3000 Cdn.  If you do it, it will cost you about $800 and your own time.  If it was a wheel bearing, you would hear noise ALL of the time.

After 325,000kms, my CV joint finally failed.  Same noises that your Disco is making. Only way to tell is to remove the wheel hum and examine the CV.

As for Canadian Tire doing the work with OEM parts that you buy... interesting question.  I've had some experience with Canadian Tire service.  One fellow I spoke to had this to say about my Land Rover...

"I don't find LandRover in my computer.  If it's not in my computer, it doesn't exist."  But my Land Rover is right out front..."sorry, I don't know nothing about no Land Rovers".  gee...thanks.

I'd rather you find experienced mechanics who are willing to work on your Disco.  The moment a mechanic says "gee, I don't know about that..." RUN!  They can make a simple problem turn ugly.  That's my experience anyway.

I won't comment on the quality of service either. 'nuff said.

Rear door won't open at all?  Inside or outside latch does nothing?  oh boy.  I've never seen that before.  You may have to crawl into the back compartment and start dismantling the door panel, if possible.  Spray penetrating oil all over the latch mechanism and hope the latch frees up.  Otherwise, you'll be visiting your local LR shop for assistance.  Cha-Ching!$$$$

Maybe you can activate the latch with the inside door panel off and a long pair of needle-nose pliers or a long screwdriver?  Worth a try.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
