Land Rover Repair: land rover problems, torque converter, valve job

Question
thanks for the quick reply.  the problem occurs very intermittant.usually after you've been riding on the interstate for a while.  you can mash the pedal down and it's like it's not getting fuel. then it will recover a few seconds later and do it again when you really get on the gas.  although, you don't have to be on the gas to do it.  you can just be crusing and it will do it.  now i have noticed a hill seem to make it do it more regular.  it will not do it just coasting or crusing at lower speeds.  now it happened one time and the check engine light came on and then went off like it didn;t have time to store the code because it corrected itslef.  i read that it could be a tps sensor going bad also.  i'm just lost, it doesen't really feel like a torque converter or trans though?  please email me back if you have any more info.
thanks

hey there, any help would be appreciated.  i'm a technician and this land rover is kicking my ass.  i got a 97 discovery with 4.0, auto.  this thing runs great, got 120k on it.  the problem is, and very interemitant, aroung 60mph or so on the interstate the car will bogg down for a sec and then run fine.  it will do it for about 10 seconds and then rnu like a brand new one.  someone said it could be the carbon in the valves and it needed a valve job?  i've checked everything and can't find anything.  it's a really weird prob.  any suggestions qwould be great.
thanks

Hi Jason,

At what point does the Disco begin to show signs of power loss?  As soon as you reach 60mph?  Are you running at 60mph for x minutes and THEN it 'bogs' down?  When you say 'bogs down', do you suspect transmission?  Does it feel like the engine is stalling out or that something is inhibating the power?   Once this problem happens and recovers, does it reappear later on or can you continue for hours without seeing the problem again?   Would you think it was temperature related - by this I mean that the Disco reaches a certain temp (as a result of highway speed), the problem occurs then the temp is 'corrected' and the problem goes away.  Has the problem ever occurred at lower speeds?  How does it handle steep hills or towing?

I'm just trying to understand the problem a little bit better.  I've asked around to other Disco owners to see if anyone else has had this problem.

Please let me know about the above questions and get back to me asap.  Meanwhile, I'll do some more research for you.

Jason,  some owners are suggesting fuel line fouling up.  Have you recently had your injectors serviced?  How about the fuel filter.

If this was a "Millionaire" game...the vote is in and other owners are suggesting fuel feed problem. I got quite a few hits about bad fuel and clogged fuel filters causing similar problems.  Most seem to think its fuel feed or ignition related.  Could be vacuum leak, injectors, plugs, and possibly...valve clearances incorrect (diesel models only).

If you see the check engine light flash, even for a moment, a code should be present.  Find a mechanic with a OBDII reader...get the code and come back here.  I'll track it down for you.

Best of luck and please let me know what comes about.
