Motorcycle Repair: twinstar, bill silver, test bill

Question
Hi
I just got a 1978 twinstar 185. The owner was trying to charge the battery on the bike and he accidently touched the frame with the charger. The bike runs fine but the indicator light/brake lights, etc now don't work. I checked the bults and the main fuse and they are fine...where do I go from here?

Answer
Allan, generally when bulbs are good and fuses are good and battery is good and things aren't working, then the ground end of the circuits are disconnected.

Use a good 12v test light to check circuits with, grounding the clip end and then testing for battery voltage power in the affected circuits.
If you find power and the component is good, then the grounding is the cause of the lack of lights.

It is a 6v system so the test bulb will be dimmer than normal on a 12v system, but it should still light up enough to give you an indication of voltage to the test light.

Always start testing with a fully charged battery that will pass a load test.
