Motorcycle Repair: FLTRI voltage regulator testing procedures, line mechanic, voltage reg

Question
Mike
I have an 05 FLTRI with a brand new Interstate battery. The volt guage has started to fluctuate for just above 10 volts up to 14 volts. it does not do this all the time and it varies with engine rpm. I have the factory manual but it does not give testing procedures for the voltage reg/stator, just battery voltage. I have a Fluke meter and am a formere GM line mechanic. Any suggestions on how to properly determine what the electrical problem is?
Thanks
Rock

Answer
You first need to check at the battery for your voltage so you know its not the gage. At 2000 RPM you should show around 13.5 volts. At idle it will drop a little. If you are not, then you need to test the stator. Do a OHMs test from one prong to ground. should show no OHMs. Then test for AC voltage, not DC. Start the bike and you should show about 60 volts at the stator prongs. If the stator does not pass the above tests then the stator is bad. If it does then the regulator is bad
Good luck and happy riding
