Motorcycle Repair: Generator/Regulator match, c generator, state regulator

Question
Mike,
I want to fit an aftermarket  solid state regulator to my '70 model kickstart motorcycle. Present setup includes a 100W rated d.c.generator (non harley) feeding a 7ah battery. I presume the generator requires reverse current protection once its output drops below 7 amps. None of the aftermarket regulators I've seen for d.c. generator distinguish between the specific output ratings of each model. Does this mean that all generators fitted to xl.... sportsters between '65 and '77 and similarly big twins '65 to '69 are rated/regulated for 7ah batteries? Ifnot, how do I distinguish a regulator for this application from a regulator matching a higher output gen/battery as required for electric start etc? Or, were all these models kickstart/7ah battery. If so what was their original generator (rated) outputs?
Hope you can help.

Answer
There was no difference in generators and regultors on the kickstart bikes as compared to the electric start. The difference is a bigger battery for the starter, due to the draw. If the battery was used from a kickstart bike it would have trouble turning it over.
Just get a regulator for the year of your bike and you will do fine
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
