Motorcycle Repair: 1999 sportster blown motor rebuild, rod bearings, evo motor

Question
QUESTION: I blew my motor last summer obiously ran it out of oil.My main seal was leaking bad it took me a while to figure it out and when I did I replaced it but put it in backwards I think? So I get it home its only runnin on 1 cylinder I take it apart and one pistons chewed the wall of the jug is scarred pistons melted and the debre from the heat has dented my head and bent a lifter.I want to put it back toghether so my first plan of action is find 2 jugs that have had an 883 to 1200 conversion kit put in them the jugs are used but appear usable.I get a set of 883 to 1200 conversion pistons w rings used but not damaged and I get a rear 883 head used appears to be good.My question is am I going about this the right way or am I fucking myself trying to rely on used parts to work out for me?now I do believe Ill have to get new rings for the pistons and all new seals for the motor itself!?I cant afford to put it in the shop and am to stubborn to do it I want to rebuild it myself just the way it was before!Id just like some guidance as to if Im headed in the right direction with this project ,the cheapest easiest way possible.Im just going by the obious and a repair manual Ive never done this before but its my first bike and it means alot to me !!!!Sincerely, qztattooz

ANSWER: SInce you had the problem with the motor running out of oil, I would completly tear down the motor. You might have damaged the rod bearings or the right and left main bearing. Also, you might have had some metal get into the bottom end from the melt down. Your cam bearing might hav gotten damaged as well.
The other thing is you just cant put pistons in cylinders, because they look good. On a EVO motor the cylinders have to be put in pressure plates and checked with a micrometer to make sure they are within specs. If they aret, all you are going to get is smoke.
I think you would be better off completly rebuilding the motor, so as not to have problems down the road.
Good luck and happy riding

QUESTION:          Thanks for the advice I did have thethe lower end checked out and all is good ,so Ive got 883 jugs that have been punched out to fit a conversion 1200 piston. So I should just get new pistons is what your telling me including seals and valves?Am I correct?

Answer
I would get new pistons, due to the fact you dont know how much the used pistons are worn.  You wont need new valves unless one is damaged, but I would check the valve guide clearence, lap the valve seats and install new valve seals
