Motorcycle Repair: charging system 1981 honda, oil seals, voltage reg

Question
I have a 1981 honda cx500 , I am only getting 9 volts to the batt. does this usually mean the altenator is bad or the voltage reg. or rectifier? Any help please. Tom love

Answer
Tom, I will direct you to the CX500-650 page that will help you troubleshoot the problem in detail. One of the phases in the stator is gone, unless the yellow connector plug has overheated and you lost one of the yellow wire connections.
Go to:

In most cases, the stator has gone bad, requiring replacement, which requires pulling the motor and back cover. Get gaskets, water pump seal parts, oil seals and O-rings before you dive in there.

It's a job, but a lot of people have done it, using a good set of tools and manual... and a lot of patience.
