Motorcycle Repair: knocking by left footpeg, suziki, sprockets

Question
Hey Mark, my names nick and just recently bought a suziki gsxr 600.  Its a 2000 with 9800 miles.   I got a good deal on it but to the point.  Whenever i am slowly going up in rpms (2-5000 rpm) theres a knock...knock...knock by my left foot peg.  there is a lot of weight behind it and does it through every gear.  When it is in neutral and i rev the engine high it does not do it.  I feel that the engine is very strong.  As of this point i feel it could possibly be my chain.  Its fairly loose but i dont know how tight it should be. Whenever i get on it pretty fast it either doesnt do it or i dont notice it.  Also the longer i drive it the worse it gets.  Id really appreciate your opinion on this matter..this is my first bike.  Thanks a lot   my email is NOTLEAVINGAGAIN@AOL.COM

Answer
Hi Nick,

I suspect the chain is excessively loose or defective.

The front sprocket case cover and crankcase should be inspected for evidence of damages.

Inspect chain and both sprockets for wear. Keep chain well lubricated and properly adjusted.

Always replace chain and both sprockets as a set. Old sprockets will quickly ruin a new chain, and vice versa.
