Motorcycle Repair: rejetting carburator without kit, jet sizes, carb settings

Question
1996 Kawasaki 800a vulcan---I am doing away with the emissions and the air restrictions and I want to go to a straight air filter and snorkel without any air restriction.  I would like to know on rejetting if it is possible to do without having to buy a kit and where would I find the specs?  Thank you and your help will be appreciated.

Answer
Hi John,

Yes, it is possible.

Tuning carburetor air-fuel mixtures accurately is not an easy task.

Tuning often requires removing, tuning, and re-installing the carbs numerous times to get the A/F mix correct.

You may find the jet sizes and carb settings that works well for another VN800 owner at "www.vroc.com" or on message boards such as those at "www.motorcycleusa.com"

When tuning, you'll need a variety of jet sizes at hand. Or, do the math and figure base line jetting.

When tuning, it's important to make one change to the carb at a time to know what effect each change makes. Reversing your work to find the problem is fruitless.

Changes to the carb and intake will require the exhaust to be modified as well.
