Motorcycle Repair: gas smell in oil, exhaust emissions, valve seal

hey chris its jim again,I have the 1981 cb400hawk and do you know what could cause the oil to have a gas smell...jim

Hi Jim.
 A strong smell of fuel in the oil is clearly not normal, but as to what could cause it, I am not certain.  You may have a valve seal allowing it to sneak past, but then that would also show through oil being burned off.  That would show through the exhaust emissions being blueish rather than relatively invisible.

Other than that, I am not sure.  Check for fuel in the oil.
