Nissan Repair: Inquiry on Engine issue, obd ii scanner, vacuum leak

Question
QUESTION: Hello Mr Sudderth,
I drive a Murano 2005 model. Often I observe that when the car is started the starting noise is found to be so unhealthy. It starts but suddenly the sound becomes low. It used to happen when I drive a long distance, stalled for 5-10mts and then restart. Now it happens for each start. Apprecite your expert advice.
Regards,David

ANSWER: David,

I would look into a tuneup with new plugs as a minimum.  Also, I would check for codes since there are probably some that have been set in memory.  A consult II scan tool is what the Nissan dealer uses.  However, you can obtain a scan tool from the internet for about $100 U.S. dollars.  Here is one that I looked up on the internet at Google.  Your choice on where to buy.  The nice thing about this one is that it shows the definition and not just the number.  So, there is no having to look it up in a book.

QUESTION: Hello Mr Sudderth, thanks for ur advice. But the plugs were changed a few months ago i.e in Jan10. I have got it scanned a few months before when the SEL has come on the odometer and it was something like P455.
I am worried if the car wont start when I drive to work.

Answer
David,

A P0455 is the evaporative system and that means either the gas cap is loose or defective or you have a evaporative hose or connector that is rotten or loose.  A vacuum leak could cause what you are talking about.  Check the gas cap, it is probably good, or get the car on a lift and inspect the hoses from the gas tank to the evaporative canister and up to the engine.
