Answer
Hi Lon -

Did not get the year and make of your Nissan, however you may have some blockage in your system, or a defective switch. The compressor runs dependent on several sensors that monitor head pressure, system normalities so any discrepancy may cause the compressor to shut down. This is a safety feature that helps protect the compressor.

I would take it to a competent A/C shop and have it diagnosed, as it is obvious that the problem is more than adding freon. Could be a defective pressure switch, clogged filter screen, even an overcharged system, as well as an undercharged system, which probably means you have a freon leak somewhere. In any case the system will probably need to be evacuated, components fixed, vacuum applied to check for leaks, and then recharged again.

Hope this helps -
