Nissan Repair: engine miss, vent line, gas tank

Question
96S10 6 cylinder 88,000 miles
About a month ago I filled my gas tank and put more gas in after the pump clicked off(possible over fill). After I went a couple of miles te motor missed momentarily (1 second) and continued to miss that way about a dozen times in the next 75 miles,at one point it did miss for about 5 seconds.

It had not missed for a while, and I had a can of Seafoam(removes water)fuel treatment with me and I put it in the tank and topped off the tank to mix it in,I was thinking water in the gas I had just bought.

No problems since until yesteday when I stuffed the gas tank after the pump clicked and a couple of miles down the road it missed and a minute later missed a bit longer(2 seconds). I have driven 25 miles and it has not done any missing yet.

Am I causing this by over filling the tank?

Answer
Hi Tom -

On rare occasions, overfilling the tank could cause engine problems, like missing. Sometimes when topping it off too much, fuel gets into the vent line and could cause this.

Of course, to see if this is true for your car, next time you fill up, do not top it off, and see what happens. Any reason why you are over filling? This is usually not recommended due to expansion of fuel in the tank.

Also a possibility could be replacing the fuel cap. Especially if your check engine light is on.

Hope this helps -
