Nissan Repair: Fuel and Brake warning dash lights on, nissan pulsar, fuel light

Question
Hi Von,
I brought a 2nd hand nissan pulsar Q 1990 model and when i drive the fuel and brake warning lights on the dash board come on and off while driving, the car seems to lose a little power, i was just wondering if you could give me any idea on what the problem is

Answer
Murray,

First I would check the alternator by going to Autozone or Checker and getting an electrical inspection performed for free.  Then, after you verify that the charging system is working properly verify the brakes are good, no leaks and no out of balance system.  Peobably a good idea to bleed the brakes.  The brake light comes on for three different reasons.  First, the parking brake switch is not being depressed when the parking brake is released.  Second, the brakes have an inbalance, that is the front to back has a leak or a soft line or bad brake fluid and the last reason is that the alternator is going out.  The fuel light would be a shorted fuel sensing unit and this is quite common on your car.  Have to drop the tank for this one...
