Nissan Repair: SPEEDOMETER, electronic speedometer, nissan pathfinder

Question
I HAVE AN 88 NISSAN PATHFINDER WITH V6/4WD/AT/168,000M. WHEN DRIVING AND INCREASING MY SPEED THE SPEEDOMETER WILL INCREASE WITH MY CORRECT SPEED. BUT AS I DECREASE MY SPEED WHILE DRIVING THE SPEEDOMETER WILL STAY STUCK AT THE LAST READING. THE NEEDLE WILL ONLY COME DOWN WHEN I ALMOST COME TO A STOP. SO I DON'T KNOW MY EXACT SPEED WHEN I'M SLOWING DOWN. I REMOVE THE DASH AND OILED THE SPEEDOMETER BUT NO HELP. I WAS THINKING OF LUBING THE CABLE BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW TO PULL CABLE OUT. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS CAUSING THIS PROBLEM? I WOULD LIKE TO FIX IT MYSELF. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP.

Answer
Hal,

It sounds like the speedometer itself is going bad as the cable will wind up and down with speed.  I think yours has an electronic speedometer without a cable.  But, in either case if the speedometer sticks it is the speedometer and not the drive mechanism.  If you have taken it apart and lubricated it and it still does it I would source one from a wrecking yard and replace it.
