Nissan Repair: clutch, clutch release, clutch pressure plate

Question
I was driving down the freeway and went to shift and heard a crunch noise, as if smashing a plastic cup, then my clutch didn't respond at all. Do I need a new clutch, or a cable or something else?
1989 Nissan Pulsar, standard trans., not sure of the engine size.
Do you have any suggestions on how to be sure before  I take it to a repair shop?
The clutch has always been very tight to the floor.

Answer
Robyn,

You are looking at the clutch release fork or the clutch itself.  If it does not release it is probably the clutch release fork that has broken or come off.  Sounds like it is time for a clutch, pressure plate, pilot bushing and release fork.
