Nissan Repair: 2002 Nissan Pathfinder starting issue, nissan pathfinder, nissan dealer

I have a 2002 Pathfinder SE with 40K. A few months ago, I noticed an occasional hesitation after the engine started to crank. It would start to crank, pause for just a second, then continue to crank, then start right up. This only happened every few days or so. Lately, the frequency of these occurances increased to every 4-5 starts, and the hesitation time increased as well. It has never failed to start but it seems more and more likely as the problem gets worse. My local ASE mechanic checked the usual starting systems,starter, alternator, said they were fine. Replaced battery just to be safe. No improvement. I brought it to my Nissan dealer and left it for a week. They could not duplicate the problem. (Of course!) Help!!

If the starting problem continues it will probably be the starter.  With the age and the condition that is what it sounds like to me.  This is especially true since you say the battery is new and it is still doing the hesitation on starting thing.
