Nissan Repair: Heater problem, heater hose line, nissan maxima se

Question

Thanks for your help. I'll try it but can you give me an idea of where on the firewall I should look for this heater hose? Or what it looks like so that I can properly identify it? Also, after I loosen it I assume that I will hear the air rush out at which point I will reconnect? Thanks again.

I have a 1999 Nissan Maxima SE 5-speed. Prior to this car I owned the 1996 version of the same vehicle. In both cases I have experienced the same problem with the heater. After driving for a period of time with the temperature set to (let's say) 80 degrees, all of a sudden the air coming out of the vents will cool down as if the thermostat were set to 65 degrees and will stay that way even if I up the temperature to 84 degrees. Only raising the thermostat to 85 degrees (its highest point) will heat once again be felt but then the car becomes an oven. In my first Maxima I had the thermostat replaced but since that did not solve the problem I did not try the same cure. Do you have any idea what the problem might be and how to correct it? Thanks in advance.

Kevin,

There has to be air in the heater hose line.  I would loosen the hose at the firewall and let the air out and the problem should go away.  You do not have to take the hose off all the way.  And, be careful as the heater core pipe is weak at best.  You do not want to break it.

Answer
Kevin,

The hoses are located close to the passenger side of the firewall and are black like the radiator hoses just smaller in diameter.  Yes, you will see the air and antifreeze start to leak out.  Remember that you do not have to take the hose off.  Just loosen the clamp and wiggle the hose a bit and it will bleed the air out.  Have the engine running with the heat on when you do it.  I like to do it and then start the car and let it bleed the air out and then cut it off and then retighten the hose.  I do not like working near a running engine.  Remember, no ties or long hair if you do...
